What is a Variable Font?
Variable fonts pack multiple styles like weight and width into a single OpenType file. One file can behave like many, giving you finer control without swapping between separate fonts.
Tips for use
- App notes: Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign expose axis sliders for variable fonts; Figma supports variable axes but only a subset of OpenType features. Canva supports static uploads (.OTF) best.
-
Feature availability varies: our variable builds are exported as TrueType. In some apps, this means certain OpenType features (e.g.,
caltcontextual alternates,ss01–ss03stylistic sets) may be limited or unavailable in the variable file.
Why our variable fonts are TrueType
TrueType (TTF) variable fonts have the broadest support across operating systems and design apps, making them the more reliable export for now. We’ll consider OTF as tooling support improves.
