Our Process

The Practical Lettering way. How we design and develop our fonts.

Practical Lettering is an independent type foundry creating digital fonts inspired by the golden age of commercial art.

Every typeface we design begins with hand lettering - sketched and inked before being digitized.

Our original alphabets and historical revivals are inspired by the everyday sign writers, chain stitch embroiderers, and commercial artists, from a time when lettering was done by hand.

We design with the physical world in mind, not just computer screens. Our fonts are made for the grocery store sign artist, the tattooer, the chainstitcher, the sign painter, the letterhead and graphic designer - artists who bring their own creative influence to the lettering reference they use.
